Job Summary
The Senior Gameplay Programmer engineers real-time multiplayer interactions, physics-based environment mechanics, and autonomous AI behaviors using C# inside the Unity engine. Core responsibilities include managing technical feature development from concept to deployment, optimizing runtime frame performance on high-end VR rendering systems, authoring clean and reusable code libraries, and providing technical leadership and mentorship to junior developers.
Technical Stack & Spatial Computing Environment
In your daily development sprints, you will develop, optimize, and debug across an integrated stack centered on premium, low-latency immersion:
- Core Game Engine Architecture: Advanced runtime optimization, memory profiling, and feature implementation using Unity.
- Primary Programming Dialect: Enterprise-grade, highly idiomatic object-oriented C#.
- Network & Multiplayer Frameworks: High-concurrency state synchronization and latency-compensation protocols designed for localized 6-person real-time multiplayer matches.
- Hardware Interfacing Layers: Custom tracking pipelines translating full-body motion capture data, real-time camera inputs, and haptic vest outputs into low-latency in-game responses.
- Development Workflows: Agile version control via GitHub, issue tracking dashboards, and asynchronous studio alignment engines (e.g., Discord, Google Workspace).
Experience & Competencies
Candidates must demonstrate strong engineering fundamentals, a proven track record of shipping commercial titles, and clear technical leadership capabilities:
Core Engineering Requirements
- Professional Programming Tenure: Minimum of 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep, specialized expertise in C#.
- Unity Engine Mastery: Substantial, hands-on professional history building complex features, managing scenes, and optimization profiles inside the Unity game engine.
- Shipped Commercial Track Record: A proven track record with at least 2 shipped commercial video games (with a strong preference for titles launched on PC or console ecosystems). Candidates must demonstrate exposure across the entire game development lifecycle, from early prototype ideation to final submission and live-ops patching.
- Algorithmic & Spatial Architecture: Exceptional understanding of 3D math, spatial reasoning, rigid-body physics, data structures, profiling pipelines, and algorithmic efficiency.
Technical Leadership & Cultural Alignment
- Mentorship & Team Leadership: Past experience operating as a technical software lead or feature group lead, with a clear ability to articulate a positive leadership philosophy and give specific examples of helping junior programmers grow.
- Gamer Empathy & Passion: An active, everyday gamer with a comprehensive understanding of current gaming trends, platform mechanics, and popular releases. Ownership of a personal VR headset and regular gameplay within consumer VR spaces is considered a massive operational plus.
- Communication Depth: Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, allowing you to explain complex engineering trade-offs, write clear documentation, and participate in post-mortem reviews of code failures.
Key Responsibilities
1. Multiplayer Gameplay Engineering & Architecture (40%)
- Build Immersive Mechanics: Design, build, and deploy complex gameplay features and real-time multiplayer interactions for our custom 6-person VR experiences.
- Program Autonomous AI: Write advanced AI agent behaviors, pathfinding scripts, and state machines to populate virtual worlds with responsive, realistic challenges.
- Write Reusable Code Frameworks: Author clean, well-commented, and robust C# source code that can be easily shared and reused across multiple active game projects.
- Own Key Tech Systems: Take complete technical ownership over critical features or system areas, ensuring strong software design and performance from day one.
2. Unity Engine Optimization & Rapid Prototyping (35%)
- Maximize Runtime Efficiency: Keep up with the latest engine features and profiling tools to squeeze maximum performance out of Unity, keeping framerates stable and fluid to prevent motion sickness.
- Lead Rapid Prototyping: Partner with design teams to rapidly prototype experimental features, testing out mechanics through agile, code-safe tests.
- Debug Core Vulnerabilities: Root out, trace, and patch complex gameplay bugs, memory leaks, and concurrency conflicts across our active titles.
- Build Development Tools: Design and implement custom engine extensions, pipeline tools, and helper scripts to make the broader development team more efficient.
3. Cross-Functional Teamwork & Technical Mentorship (25%)
- Mentor Core Programmers: Provide ongoing technical mentorship, clear code reviews, and architectural guidance to intermediate and junior developers across the engineering group.
- Partner with Art and Design: Collaborate closely with 3D artists, technical animators, and level designers to iterate on features and build polished gameplay systems.
- Contribute Creative Value: Participate in all stages of production, offering practical ideas on how to improve game design, workflow mechanics, and location-based VR configurations.
Expected Outputs & Deliverables
- Well-optimized, bug-free C# gameplay components and modular multiplayer systems inside Unity.
- Comprehensive technical documentation, architectural blueprints, and clean runtime code reviews.
- Custom engine tools, automated scripts, and asset-handling extensions for our content pipeline.
- Weekly sprint contributions, documented bug fixes, and performance data from optimization profiles.
