Field Agent

Job Summary

The Field Agent plays a critical role in safeguarding the integrity of responsible mineral supply chains by ensuring that mine sites operate ethically and responsibly. Reporting directly to the Project Coordinator, the successful candidate will be responsible for immediately identifying, reporting, and addressing risks related to human rights, health and safety, environmental harm, fraud, or conflict minerals. This position carries significant trust and ethical responsibility, requiring extensive time living and working directly at assigned project mine sites across Rwanda.

Qualification

• High level of professional judgment, integrity, and vigilance.
• Relevant professional background or training suitable for field-level data collection, compliance, and multi-stakeholder engagement (e.g., development, geology, environmental science, or related fields).

Experience

• Experience in field monitoring, data collection, or on-the-ground compliance auditing.
• Proven experience building and maintaining professional relationships with local stakeholders such as government authorities, mining cooperatives, or civil society.
• Familiarity with mineral traceability procedures or OECD due diligence guidance is a strong advantage.
• For Senior Field Agent track: Demonstrated experience operating with a high degree of independence, conducting quality assurance, and mentoring or training junior field personnel.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Field Monitoring & Data Collection:

• Conduct regular mine site visits to collect, verify, and report data on incidents, risks, and events.
• Assess and record site risks concerning human rights abuses (child/forced labor), health hazards, environmental damage, fraud, corruption, or conflict-related security.
• Oversee and verify mineral traceability tagging and scanning processes at mine sites in alignment with OECD procedures.
• Support mine operators and cooperatives in implementing agreed risk mitigation and Corrective Action Plans (CAPs).

Reporting & Communication:

• Transmit collected data to local database managers and designated staff in line with established procedures.
• Prepare and submit comprehensive monthly mine site reports promoting total transparency and accuracy.
• Flag and escalate all technical, ethical, or safety concerns immediately without delay through appropriate SLR Better Mining channels.

Stakeholder Engagement & Training:

• Build and maintain professional relationships with mining cooperatives, government officials, and community members.
• Support and facilitate meetings, awareness-raising programs, or training sessions for local supply chain stakeholders.
• Identify capacity-building needs and contribute to the improvement of local monitoring systems.

Senior Field Agent Responsibilities (where Applicable)

• Operates with a high degree of independence and takes responsibility for the quality and integrity of work conducted by the local field team.
• Acts as the primary point of contact for Project/International Analysts to resolve site-specific issues.
• Collaborates on documentation and quality assurance, including participating in office-based work on a rotation basis.
• Mentors, supports, and trains junior or newly recruited Field Agents while assessing internal team capacity gaps.
