About the Role

The Emergency Planning Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the Emergency Management Program and leading the development, implementation, review, and continuous improvement of the WMFN Emergency Preparedness Plan.

The role serves as a key liaison between Chief and Council, Administration, and WMFN Members to ensure effective emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and resilience planning. The position also promotes public confidence through professional coordination, training, and emergency readiness activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Emergency Management Manager in developing budgets, work plans, schedules, and operational priorities.
  • Promote emergency preparedness awareness and actively engage community members in emergency planning, response, and recovery initiatives.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to strengthen emergency management capacity through collaboration with neighboring communities and partner organizations.
  • Support implementation and management of contracts related to emergency planning, training, exercises, and vendor services.
  • Coordinate annual Hazard, Risk, and Vulnerability Assessments (HRVA) and support emergency response strategy development.
  • Lead preparation and coordination of evacuation plans, mitigation activities, and emergency readiness initiatives.
  • Coordinate implementation of approved emergency management strategies including awareness sessions, training activities, and Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) setup.
  • Serve as the central point of contact between the Nation and Provincial authorities during emergency plan implementation.
  • Maintain and continuously improve Emergency Management Program capacity and update emergency plans and related documentation.
  • Identify emergency funding opportunities and coordinate procurement, tracking, and management of emergency equipment and supplies.
  • Develop and coordinate emergency preparedness training and simulation exercises for EOC and Emergency Support Services (ESS) teams.
  • Facilitate emergency training programs and workshops for staff, leadership groups, and response teams.
  • Build and maintain relationships with regional and provincial authorities, businesses, and industry stakeholders.
  • Develop and support volunteer engagement initiatives related to emergency management activities.
  • Lead post-incident evaluations, debrief activities, and ensure lessons learned are integrated into future emergency planning.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing emergency programs and align them with community resilience initiatives and strategic plans.
  • Collaborate on research initiatives and funding applications for emergency-related projects and infrastructure improvements.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Your Toolkit Includes

Education and Experience

  • Certificate in Emergency Management or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible professional experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of direct work experience in an executive, leadership, or coordination capacity, preferably within a First Nations organization or similar service environment.
  • Relevant education, certifications, and practical experience in Emergency Management, Emergency Operations Centres (EOC), Emergency Support Services (ESS), incident command, emergency preparedness, response, and recovery.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining productive relationships with government agencies, public organizations, private sector entities, and community partnerships.
  • Strong understanding of local government operations, geography, climate conditions, history, and community service structures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and administrative reporting tools.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of First Nations community genealogy, traditions, culture, values, and history.
  • Ability to organize multiple priorities and work effectively during emergency situations.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check is required.
