Job Summary
The Construction Engineer provides vital remote engineering, operational, and project delivery assistance to U.S.-based project teams from the Kigali office. Working under the direct supervision of the Project Engineer, this role collaborates closely with U.S. project managers, field engineers, and superintendents. Core focuses include producing detailed work plans, executing quantity and cost tracking, providing technical clarifications, supporting remote quality assurance, and managing critical documentation workflows to ensure projects are delivered with precision and efficiency.
Qualification
Candidates must hold a degree from an accredited institution in one of the following academic fields:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Engineering
- Bachelor's degree in a related engineering field
Experience
- Minimum of 2โ5 years of experience in construction engineering, project controls, or construction operations support.
- Strong, demonstrated understanding of heavy civil construction methods, specifically including earthworks, utilities, and structural concrete.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Planning & Field Support:
- Prepare and review highly detailed construction work plans, method statements, and sequencing documents to guide field crews.
- Assist in reviewing complex construction drawings, shop drawings, and Requests for Information (RFIs) to provide clear technical clarifications.
- Help identify, analyze, and resolve active field construction issues, coordinating closely with U.S.-based staff to implement timely solutions.
Project Controls, Tracking & Invoicing:
- Support daily quantity tracking workflows and compile production reports to help teams strictly monitor actual vs. planned progress.
- Contribute to the preparation and verification of official project invoices by validating installed field quantities and compiling supporting documentation.
- Coordinate directly with corporate procurement and operations teams to ensure material and equipment needs are accurately identified and documented.
Quality Assurance & System Administration:
- Support remote quality control and assurance efforts by systematically reviewing inspection/test data and verifying adherence to strict project standards.
- Develop, optimize, and maintain engineering tools, templates, and logs to continuously improve documentation and overall operational efficiency.
- Participate actively in project meetings, offering technical support and systematically tracking action items across teams.
Skills & Competencies
Required Competencies & Software Skills:
- Engineering Tools: Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, and project scheduling software (such as MS Project or Primavera).
- Collaboration Infrastructure: Familiarity with remote collaboration and project support environments, specifically Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and Procore.
- Core Aptitude: Detail-oriented mindset backed by strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Communication & Alignment: Excellent organizational and communication skills; ability to easily support cross-functional teams remotely.
Language & Schedule Flexibility:
- Language Proficiency: Fluent command of English (both spoken and written) is required. Additional knowledge of French or Kinyarwanda is considered a plus.
- Time Zone Alignment: Willingness to occasionally work flexible hours to successfully align with U.S. time zones for critical meetings and operational synchronization.
