Job Summary
The Internal Audit & Financial Controls Specialist supports and audits the execution of Marriott control environment processes across all hotel departments. Core daily responsibilities include conducting standard operating procedure (SOP) audits; executing month-end audit steps; evaluating operational units against Marriott Department Risk Assessment Tools; generating compliance reports; training department leaders on financial resource utilization; and verifying that profits, losses, and collections adhere to federal, state, and brand regulations.
Foundational Capabilities & Prerequisites
- Academic Preparation: A completed 4-year bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a closely related business area is strictly required.
- Professional Footprint: A minimum of 1 year of direct experience operating within internal auditing, corporate accounting, financial analysis, or related compliance environments.
- Regulatory & Legal Baseline: Complete compliance with federal and state legislation governing financial collections, accounting integrity, and anti-fraud procedures.
- Software & Data Fluency: High comfort utilizing complex computer networks and financial database architectures to build detailed spreadsheets, compile data tables, and run technical audits.
- Communication & Leadership: Exceptional interpersonal abilities, with a proven history of explaining technical financial frameworks clearly, managing friction, and teaching non-financial managers.
- Analytical Problem-Solving: Strong capability to compile, categorize, code, and calculate dense transactional sets to diagnose underlying process failures and formulate long-term solutions.
Compliance & Audit System Architecture

- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Reviewing accounting pipelines across all property operational sectors to guarantee precise compliance with standard internal accounting blueprints.
- Department Risk Assessment Tools: Systematically running internal risk frameworks across food & beverage, rooms, and guest service divisions to catch operational vulnerabilities before they escalate.
- Quarterly Audit & SRA Requirements: Organizing, preparing, and verifying all property documentation arrays to meet strict quarterly audit timelines and specialized Security Risk Assessment (SRA) evaluations.
- Month-End Close Verification: Executing technical month-end reconciliation loops, isolating profit/loss deviations, and constructing clear data readouts for property executives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Control Environment Audit & Execution
- Coordinate, implement, and monitor structured Accounting SOP audits across every operational and administrative division of the hotel property.
- Compile, code, categorize, calculate, and verify financial telemetry, confirming that all local property balances match official corporate auditing parameters.
- Validate that all scheduled internal audits are completed accurately, transparently, and on time, maintaining an airtight control environment to safeguard physical and digital assets.
2. Operational Partnership & Leadership Training
- Act as the primary technical advisor to property department heads, providing clear guidance on budget management, resource deployment, and financial control mechanics.
- Design and lead regular training sessions for operational supervisors to improve property-wide literacy regarding compliance guidelines and cost controls.
- Partner with operational teams to build action plans that address audit findings, closing performance gaps, and exceeding property financial benchmarks.
3. Financial Reporting & Month-End Reconciliation
- Execute critical month-end audit routines, ensuring all property revenue losses, write-offs, and profit metrics are documented accurately.
- Build and deliver clear compliance reports and presentations to property executives and corporate stakeholders on a regular cadence.
- Review property transaction loops against state and federal frameworks to guarantee all billing collection paths comply with standard anti-fraud laws.
4. Risk Mitigation & Process Optimization
- Use Marriott's specialized Department Risk Assessment and SRA suites to evaluate operational systems regularly, identifying and fixing process gaps early.
- Interpret daily property accounting information to solve complex financial errors and streamline manual record-keeping habits.
- Maintain excellent, collaborative working relationships with external partners, corporate auditors, and regional management teams during property reviews.
