Campus Electrician

Job Summary

The Campus Electrician executes, documents, and coordinates the preventative and emergency maintenance of all campus electrical networks. Core responsibilities include managing servicing schedules for high-output backup generators, commercial HVAC units, industrial firefighting pumps, and heavy kitchen/laundry appliances; troubleshooting localized circuitry failures; collaborating with external electrical contractors on new extensions; sketching wiring routes; and compiling material procurement specifications.

Foundational Capabilities & Prerequisites

Minimum Requirements

• Academic Credentials: Minimum of an Advanced Diploma in Electrical Installation and Maintenance (A1) or a verified Certificate / Craft Certificate in Electrical Installation and Maintenance from a recognized vocational or polytechnic institution.
• Proven Tenure: A minimum of 3 to 4 years of hands-on work experience conducting large-scale electrical installations, commercial facility maintenance, or institutional power grid troubleshooting.
• Technical Troubleshooting: Proven competency in conducting system diagnoses using advanced electrical test equipment, multi-meters, and hand tools to quickly isolate and repair electrical breakdowns.
• Digital Literacy: Practical computer skills in word processing, asset tracking databases, and spreadsheet software; proficiency in operating standard Microsoft Office applications.
• Operational Adaptability: Ability to respond to urgent electrical emergencies on campus, think analytically under pressure, and draft accurate technical route sketches for new circuitry.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Preventative Maintenance & Equipment Servicing

• Execute and enforce the preventative maintenance schedules for all high-capacity mechanical and electrical infrastructure, including campus generators, HVAC units, fire detection networks, and industrial firefighting pumps.
• Manage regular servicing timelines for all central electricity plants and auxiliary power nodes across the Butaro campus premises.
• Inspect, maintain, and verify the continuous functionality of all heavy campus appliances, including industrial kitchen equipment and laundry utility configurations.

2. Diagnosis, Troubleshooting & Emergency Mitigation

• Track down, diagnose, and resolve sudden network technical faults, short circuits, dysfunctional power sockets, and localized line drops to ensure uninterrupted power service.
• Conduct strict root cause analyses following power failures and develop robust technical action plans to prevent recurrence.
• Respond rapidly to unexpected electrical emergencies on campus as directed by the MEP and Solar Manager, fixing issues on-site or escalating complex anomalies to external specialist networks.

3. Installation Engineering & Contractor Supervision

• Collaborate directly with external electrical contractors to execute structural grid extensions, campus remodeling works, and new wiring adjustments.
• Draft preliminary circuit route sketches for minor installations to serve as permanent blueprints for incoming power connections.
• Review, supervise, and perform quality control checks on major contractor-led electrical and generator installation projects.
• Compile comprehensive lists of raw electrical materials, drafting exact technical specifications for structural procurement cycles.

4. Ongoing Facility Inspections

• Patrol and inspect assigned campus zones systematically to identify visibility updates, light path modifications, and public security lighting needs (e.g., street or pathway light replacements).
• Check that all campus tools and facility management installations operate safely and remain fully compliant with national safety codes.

Expected Outputs & Deliverables

• 100% operational up-time across backup generators and secondary solar interfaces.
• Complete logs of executed preventative maintenance actions for HVAC, fire pump, and appliance systems.
• Accurate, clear routing sketches and Bill of Quantities (BoQ) material sheets for building extensions.
• Prompt, documented resolution of daily stakeholder maintenance tickets (sockets, lighting, breakers).
