Job Summary
The Business Development Officer is tasked with driving revenue growth, market share expansion, and intermediary engagement for Britam's insurance lines across Rwanda. The role involves managing end-to-end sales funnels, generating competitive client quotations, gathering local market intelligence, monitoring premium collections, and acting as a primary liaison between clients, brokers, and internal technical underwriting teams. The position reports to the Country Sales Manager.
Qualification
Candidates must meet the following educational and professional benchmarks:
- Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field (such as Business Administration, Marketing, Finance, or Insurance).
- Professional Qualifications (Added Advantage): Professional certifications in Insurance, such as Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII), Insurance Institute of Kenya (IIK), or local equivalent qualifications.
Experience
- Minimum Criteria: 2 to 4 years of relevant business development and sales experience specifically within the insurance industry.
- Regulatory Awareness: Solid, practical knowledge of the insurance regulatory requirements of Rwanda.
- Technical Asset: Deep understanding of commercial general insurance lines, corporate medical packages, and broker/bancassurance workflows.
Key Responsibilities
Revenue Generation & Intermediary Management
- Secure new business directly from corporate entities or through established insurance intermediaries, aggregators, and bank partners.
- Service existing accounts proactively and maintain excellent business relationships with allocated Financial Advisors (FAs), Independent Agents, and Insurance Brokers.
- Identify and recommend high-performing FAs, Agents, and Brokers for recruitment to continually expand Britam's localized distribution network.
- Provide timely, accurate insurance quotations requested by allocated intermediaries to maximize sales conversion rates.
Portfolio Retention & Collections
- Follow up rigorously on policy renewals to maintain a high customer retention rate across general and medical books of business.
- Monitor and drive premium collections systematically, ensuring all generated accounts settle balances in compliance with company credit policies and regulatory rules.
- Forward completed proposal forms and policy applications to the underwriting department swiftly, ensuring risk alignment with set corporate acceptance guidelines.
Intelligence, Customer Care & Claims Liaison
- Gather strategic marketing intelligence, tracking competitor product launches, pricing adjustments, and general public perceptions of the company's image.
- Handle customer inquiries and client complaints—whether written or verbal—and collaborate with relevant internal departments for rapid resolution.
- Gather initial claim documentation and critical data immediately when an insured loss arises, liaising directly with the internal Claims Department to facilitate smooth processing.
- Deliver strict performance requirements and targets as defined in the department’s strategy map, balanced scorecard, and personal scorecard.

- Sales Acumen: Proven capability to pitch, negotiate, and close deals with corporate executives, brokers, and bank partners.
- Market Knowledge: Clear understanding of product design, risk exposure factors, and policy wordings for both General and Medical insurance lines.
- Analytical Reporting: Ability to gather field intelligence, prepare structured weekly performance reports, and interpret balanced scorecard metrics.
Communication & Interpersonal Profiles
- Relationship Building: Exceptional interpersonal skills to manage diverse external broker networks, banking partners, and high-net-worth clients.
- Communication Mastery: Clear, articulate, and persuasive oral and written communication skills for delivering presentations and resolving client complaints.
