Job Summary
The Android Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes high-performance native mobile solutions and end-to-end features for Sporty’s massive application user base. Core daily duties include writing clean Java and Kotlin code within an MVVM structural framework, building efficient network connections using Retrofit and Protocol Buffers, managing system dependency injection via Dagger 2, optimizing application memory and multi-threaded rendering pipelines, and conducting technical code reviews to enforce native development best practices.
Foundational Engineering & Technical Prerequisites
- Proven Professional Tenure: Minimum of 4+ years of dedicated application development experience operating directly within a native Android engineering ecosystem.
- Language Fluency: Absolute proficiency with Java, Kotlin, and the core Android development ecosystem.
- Full-Stack Mobile Comfort: A genuine enjoyment of working across all layers of mobile apps—from backend networking interfaces down to complex layout rendering.
- Architectural Reasoning: Deep, practical experience making technical decisions about mobile application architecture, including data modeling, persistence, data synchronization, and background concurrency.
- Testable Code Engineering: Proven experience building highly maintainable and testable codebases, featuring strong API design principles and unit testing techniques.
- Low-Level System Literacy: Strong working knowledge of multi-threaded programming models, asynchronous task scheduling, and mobile memory management/leak prevention.
- Communication Dynamics: Good communication and collaboration skills to operate successfully within a fast-paced, highly distributed remote environment.
Preferred Technical Multipliers
- Remote Team History: A successful previous history of working with a remote, distributed engineering team is highly beneficial.
- Jetpack & Media Stack Command: Applied familiarity with Android Jetpack component suites, image loading via Glide, and high-performance media playback engine configurations using ExoPlayer.
- CI/CD Automation Competence: Prior experience or familiarity with automated integration pipelines, specifically Jenkins automation servers and Git version control workflows.
- Binary Protocol Serialization: Exposure to or practical understanding of Protocol Buffers (Protobuf) for high-efficiency data serialization over mobile networks.
Technical Stack Architecture
As an Android Engineer, you will maintain and expand a client architecture configured within the following technical landscape:
- Native Programming Languages: Java, Kotlin
- Architectural Pattern: MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel)
- Networking & Data Transfer: Retrofit, OkHttp, Protocol Buffers (Protobuf)
- Dependency Injection: Dagger 2
- Continuous Integration & Automation: Jenkins Automated Pipelines
- Core Jetpack & System Components: Android Jetpack Suite, Git Version Control
- Asset Management & Media Processing: Glide (Image Loading), ExoPlayer (Media Playback Architecture)
Key Responsibilities
1. End-to-End Native Feature Engineering
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product Managers, UX Designers, and Backend Engineers to design, scope, and deliver high-quality, high-impact native solutions on Android.
- Build end-to-end mobile application features from scratch, cleanly integrating networking layers, local data persistence, complex business logic, and fluid user interfaces.
- Design, build, and optimize efficient, reusable native mobile components that serve as the foundation for scalable, high-performance client features.
2. Architecture Governance & Code Quality Optimization
- Organize and maintain a clean, testable codebase by applying strict MVVM patterns, rigid dependency injection via Dagger 2, and optimized API interaction layers.
- Identify structural areas of improvement within the core codebase, advocating continuously for modern mobile development best practices and linting standards.
- Conduct strict, objective peer code reviews to ensure that every incremental feature release aligns with the intended product user stories and complies with shared architecture patterns.
3. Application Infrastructure & Performance Telemetry
- Analyze, profile, and optimize UI layout hierarchies, image loading pipelines, and infrastructure application code to maximize runtime quality, efficiency, and rendering speeds.
- Write robust, comprehensive unit tests to validate edge cases, secure network data mapping, and prevent functional regressions during production deployment cycles.
- Implement structured multithreading models and monitor mobile memory footprints closely to prevent UI stuttering, main-thread blocking, and out-of-memory errors.
4. Continuous Collaboration & Technical Mentorship
- Provide ongoing technical guidance, structural advice, and constructive feedback to less experienced members of the Android engineering team.
- Participate actively in distributed team ceremonies, including sprint planning sessions, refinement meetings, product demonstrations, and retrospective reviews.
- Draft and update clean system documentation, API contracts, and internal engineering guides to streamline onboarding for new remote colleagues.
Core Competencies & Mobile Strengths
- Concurrency & Threading Precision: Understanding how coroutines, handlers, or threads interact with the Android main thread to keep UI interactions smooth under heavy processing loads.
- Memory Profiling Rigor: Expert use of memory profiling tools to isolate memory leaks, track object allocation lifetimes, and optimize cache layers.
- Asynchronous Data Orchestration: Designing robust synchronization models that safely download, parse, and store complex server data without draining device battery resources.
- Modularity & Component Reusability: Building independent, self-contained UI and data modules that help distributed engineering teams work in parallel without code conflicts.
- Constructive Architecture Review: Giving clear, objective feedback during code evaluations to help the team balance deployment speed with long-term code health.
